Light-emitting diodes – or LEDs – are solid-state semiconductor devices that convert electrical energy directly into visible light. In addition to providing a minimum of 50% savings in energy output, LEDs also offer other important advantages over traditional lighting sources:
Longer life: LEDs can last over 50,000 hours, compared to 25,000 for fluorescent tubes, and only 2,000 to 4,000 hours for an HID light source. To achieve this, LEDs must have regulated voltage and proper heat dissipation. XUS proprietary products are designed to regulate current which offers superior heat management for a maximum life cycle.
Solid-state construction: Unlike halogens, LEDs’ solid-state construction allows them to withstand external shock and movement.
Cool operation: Simple semiconductors that create light from the movement of extra electrons, LEDs generate very little heat – typically 100ºF less than halogens with equivalent light output.
Color consistency: When used with a rheostat (dimmer), LEDs do not change color - unlike traditional lighting.
On-off cycling: LEDs allow for on-off cycling, achieving full brightness in microseconds. Fluorescent lights and HID (high-intensity discharge) lamps burn out more quickly when cycled more often and require a long wait before restarting.
Mercury-free: Unlike compact fluorescent lamps, LEDs do not contain mercury.
Compact size: LEDs are considerably smaller.
